Nutrition

The pyramid of crossfit, addresses a very important aspect to physical fitness, and what it takes to become elite. At the top we see "Sport", meaning sport specific skill, such as those needed to be a proficient soccer player. Next down the pyramid we see, "Weightlifting & Throwing", which is important to developing capacities necessary to exceed performance plateaus in the sport category. "Gymnastics" emphasizes the need to properly control the body in motion, efficiently. "Metabolic Conditioning" or "MetCon" is the INTENSITY that crossfit workouts bring. The intensity that forces the body to withstand the demands, and perform at an optimum level.
At the bottom we have the most important of all. The base of the pyramid, the foundation of physical fitness is in fact "NUTRITION"!
Nutrition is the fuel for the machine. If we eat a horrible diet, we will in the long run reap horrible result. Even small changes in diet can have drastic affects on the level of output and proficiency of a crossfit athlete.
Most crossfitters ascribe to one of two fields of thought, either the "Zone Diet", where food is broken down into its three Macro-nutrients, Fat, Carbs, and Protein. The foods are then strictly measured according to their level of these three. Other athletes ascribe to the "Paleo Diet" or the "Paleolithic Diet". While the science behind this diet is sturdy. The historical backing of the evolutionary theory is unstable at best. In this diet, the athlete can only eat lean animal proteins, fruits and non-starchy veggies.
Others, who desire to increase their performance even more will often combine the two. Using the measuring system to regulate their paleo diet consumption. I myself try my best to follow this method of combining the two, and find it to be very helpful.
Food is a drug, and the body needs certain foods to perform best.
